'Brain-based controller'

Article Abstract:

The US Navy is envisioning underwater vehicles of the future capable of missions lasting longer than 30 days, and the development of a 'brain-based controller,' which would be based on the motor control system in animal brains, enabling unmanned subs to deal with vagaries of the underwater environment such as turbulence or obstacles in their paths. The US Navy's master plan, a roadmap to the future for one of the Navy's more intriguing and fat-growing classes of weapons, calls for an array of portable devices weighing 25 to 100 pounds with an endurance of 10-20 hours and a payload of one-quarter of a cubic feat.

Mother ship

Article Abstract:

The Joint Unmanned Combat Air System (J-UCAS) is designed to develop an experiment with the potential of unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs) in intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance and strike roles. The J-UCAS may launch smaller, expendable unmanned aircraft, specially designed for reconnaissance or to jam, attack or decoy high-value targets such as enemy air defenses.
