GTK/MRAV/VBCI: a decision and a conundrum

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom, Germany and France's joint development and procurement program for wheeled GTK/MRAV/VBCI armored vehicles presents issues that can possibly set reshaping guidelines for a significant component of the AFV sector in Europe. The GTK/MRAV/VBCI program was aimed at satisfying the United Kingdom and Germany's requirements for a line of wheeled modular vehicles for use as "battle taxis" in different support and second-echelon functions. It was also aimed at fulfilling France's more ambitious and bigger armored-vehicle needs, which range from a fire support/tank destroyer to a substitute for its existing line of VAB armored vehicles. The contract for the wheeled GTK/MRAV/VBCI armored vehicles program was awarded to the consortium of Giat Industries, GKN and ARGE-GTK, which is made up of MaK, Wegmann and Krauss-Maffei.

The wheeled imbroglio

Article Abstract:

The long-dormant armored fighting vehicle (AFV) industry in Europe has finally awoken from a long slumber due to significant developments that have taken place in the industry in the latter part of 1999. Among the crucial changes that have taken place are mergers and the formation of strategic alliances between AFV manufacturers. One of the more noteworthy acquisitions in the industry was the takeover of MOWAG by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada.
