Met-beating ground attack weapons

Article Abstract:

Precision delivery of air ordnance has been attained by the US after lessons learned in Desert Storm. Priority was given to the development of day/night adverse weather attack systems and the ability to attack from a safe stand-off distance. The success of precision delivery was achieved using miniature Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. However, its potential disadvantage is a weak satellite signal. Thus, other weapon system concepts are being studied including the Guided Direct Attack Penetrator which combines a GPS and INS guidance package with the 450- kilogram J-1000 penetration warhead from the Lockheed Martin Jassm.

Aerial delivery systems

Article Abstract:

The military personnel parchute continues to be very relevant due to the continued importance of air delivery of equipment, supplies and personnel in special operations. The circular basic canopy, the simplest variant of military parachutes, has evolved in terms of materials to nylon from silk. New models such as GQ Parachutes' Steerable Assault Parachutes are equipped with rear drive-slot rows and open gores for improved steering and control. Ram-air parachute variants, such as GQ Parachutes' Tactical Parachute System, mark the latest development in the field and feature a ram air canopy for improved landing and lift/drag ratio.

Things may look quiet, but Shorads..

Article Abstract:

Short/very short range air defense systems are adapting to meet the challenges poised by evolving threats. The decreasing participation of manned attacking systems to within four kilometers of the target has mandated the creation of defense systems that are capable of dealing with threats with radar cross-sections of 0.5 sq-m or less. The trend is towards the adoption of increasingly sophisticated fire control systems, lasers and hypersonic missiles.
