CVX hits budget shoals

Article Abstract:

Budget difficulties have compelled the US Navy to restructure plans for a new-generation aircraft carrier, called CVX, to replace the existing Nimitz-class design. The service, rather than launching a revolutionary clean sheet design, is instead considering a progressive introduction of new technologies into three new carriers, namely, the CVN-77, CVN-78 and CVN-79. These carriers will keep the basic Nimitz hull. CVX, whose construction is intended to start in fiscal 2006, was initially aimed at departing from the Nimitz design, using new hullforms, better signature reduction and new nuclear powerplant system.

The IN, with its diminishing force levels, is expected to protect India's Sea Lines of Communication to secure inflows of imported crude oil and protect trade and off-shore assets. About the year 2010, the IN is expected to confront challenges posed by the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, Pakistan Navy and the US Navy in its region.
