Cast off all lines: times for the Coast Guard to leave DoT

Article Abstract:

The US Coast Guard plays an important part in US domestic security and it is perhaps time to consider moving it out from under US Department of Transportation control. The Hart-Rudman Commission has proposed starting a new cabinet-level agency that would include the Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Customs Service and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

With increased concern about U.S. security, the Hart-Rudman Commission recommended creating a new cabinet-level agency consisting of the Boarder Patrol, Customs Services, Coast Guard, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
