Chile ponders frigate programmes

Article Abstract:

ASMAR of Chile and Fincantieri of Italy have signed an MoU for the cooperation and technical assistance in the design and building of a new class of frigates for the Chilean Navy. The frigates, which are expected to feature the French/Italian SAAM local area air defense system, are tentatively proposed to be constructed over the next decade. Chile plans to use the ships to replace its main surface combatants in the Chilean fleet, which face block obsolescence by the first years of 2000. Chile is also considering a British offer for second-hand Type 22 and Type 23 frigates as an alternative to the new ship construction programme.
