Clearing the fog

Article Abstract:

The threat of ballistic missile attacks from states hostile to the US is very real and growing. It is argued that many existing misconceptions about missile defense are obscuring the debate on national missile defense (NMD) capability. For instance, contrary to public perceptions, the US has no missile defense system to protect it and can no longer rely on nuclear deterrence for national security. Other misconceptions are that a US NMD system is not technologically feasible and that it would furnish a global shield of protection against a massive ballistic missile attack against US territory.

North Korean missile program drives South Korea and Japan to greater military cooperation

Article Abstract:

Increased missile development in North Korea is driving Japan and South Korea to build closer relations. Japan and South Korea, which have recently each had sea confrontations with North Korea, do not agree on how to approach the Noth Korea threat. The security alignments happening in Asia were mainly prompted by the decision of the Pyongyang government to develop the 1,500-kilometer-range Taepodong 1 missile, which is being followed by the Taepodong 2.

Challenges To US National Security

Article Abstract:

Advocates of the proposed ballistic missile defense system argue that nuclear deterence is a less expensive form of defense. New technology is needed to meet evolving threats and new international defense treaties are needed to replace irrelevant old treaties.
