Colombian paramilitary leader murdered

Article Abstract:

Carlos Castano, the one-time leader and founder of Colombia's paramilitary army, was murdered by his former colleagues as drug traffickers took control of the right-wing United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia - AUC). Twelve of AUC's top commanders, among them Castano himself, have appeared on the US Department of the Treasury's Foreign Narcotics Kingpins list.

USA faces Colombian dilemma

Article Abstract:

Colombian Marxist guerrillas executed a US citizen and seized three others on an intelligence mission on 13 February 2003. The response of the US administration is examined to determine whether they will go deeper in to avenge the murder and kidnap of its operatives or withdraw to ensure that the US mission does not sustain further casualties or slip into mission creep.
