Combining the assault amphibian battalions for Operation Iraqi Freedom

Article Abstract:

Three Marine Corps assault amphibian battalion (AsltPhibBn), which was combined, was one of the many unconventional arrangements during the Operation Iraqi Freedom. Although no one got preferential treatment, there were the usual personality issues as there are when any team comes together and combining AsltPhibBn was just one example of how one of the strengths of Marine Corps remains its ability to task organize on the fly.

Operational reach: Campaign design and the modern lessons of Operation Market Garden

Article Abstract:

Operational concept known as MARKET GARDEN, which was planned in September 1944, launched a poorly conceived, poorly executed and timidly led attack that failed to conduct a risk versus benefit analysis of the potential gains of the operations. Some of the key elements that were central to the failure of operation MARKET GARDEN are discussed.
