Covert operations: Navies seek discreet radars for surveillance

Article Abstract:

The Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) method for tactical and surface surveillance using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars sends low power wave forms and so minimizes susceptibility to targeting by anti-radiation missiles compared to electronic support measures (ESM) system of the pulsed radars. The two main rival I(X)-band FMCW radar managing the naval and maritime security are Saab Bofors Dynamics' PILOT and Thales Nederland's SCOUT which uses large time bandwidth product pulse compression waveforms to minimize the peak transmitted power.
