DCN expresses pessimism over naval consolidation prospects for Europe

Article Abstract:

The head of the France's state-owned naval shipbuilding, DCN, systems and support group has expressed pessimism on the prospects for the consolidation of Europe's naval industry. According to him, the broader consolidation of the naval industrial landscape is far away and has convinced that Europe's major naval prime contractors must consolidate to address a declining domestic workload and take on competition emerging from China, South Korea and Russia.

Austal buys out partner in US business

Article Abstract:

Austal, aluminum shipbuilder established in Mobile, Alabama has assumed full control of its Austal USA offshoot after purchasing the 30 percent stake of its equity partner Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co. for about AUD20 million in 2006. Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co. would receive AUD20.6 million for its take in Austal USA, which values the Austal USA business at just under AUD70 million overall.

Spain's S-80A submarine comes up to the surface

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the Armada Espanola's submarine S-80A in Spain that has a novel structure and is similar in many ways to the modern nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) is discussed. Shipbuilding firm, Navantia feels that there is nothing more that the S-80A that is a scaled-up derivative of the Scorpene export design.
