David versus Goliath

Article Abstract:

The attacks on military airlifters and civilian transports by man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) spurred the US to form a task force charged with recommending ways of countering the threat posed by portable missile launchers. The Counter-MANPADS proposals offered by Northrop Grumman, BAE systems, Information and Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS) are discussed with their advantages and disadvantages.

Commercial systems are helping to satisfy a burgeoning military demand for routine satellite communications. Military use of commercial satellite communication (satcom) facilities has expanded from 'phone home' voice messages to encompass a wide range of data and other services.
