Defense secretary questions military benefits package

Article Abstract:

A military benefits bill passed by the Senate that set higher pay raises of 4.8% for FY 2000 and 3.9% annually through 2004 has been questioned by Defense Sec William S Cohen. The administration has proposed lower rates of 4.4% and 3.6% respectively for the given time periods. The Senate bill will entail additional costs of $7 to $11 billion over the administration proposal. At a meeting with the Senate Budget Committee, Cohen said that Congress may not be willing to shoulder the additional expense.
