Europeans go for electric drive

Article Abstract:

France, Germany and the United Kingdom plan to adopt electric-propulsion technology for their future warships. The French Navy has decided to integrate the technology into its future warships, with French procurement agency Delegation Generale de l'Armement (DGA) set to award research deals to contractors. The German Ministry of Defense (MoD), on the other hand, has commissioned Marine Technische Gesellschaft (MTG) Marinetechnik to perform a design study on a 3,000 ton SWATH electric propulsion demonstrator, which will be built by Thyssen and funded in 1999.
