Spartan unmanned surface vehicle envisioned for array of high-risk missions

Article Abstract:

Spartan is an unmanned surface vehicle designed for an array of high-risk missions including intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and mine warfare in the littorals. Spartan is capable of carrying payloads up to 3,200 pounds at high speed to ranges up to 14 miles and would be controlled from the parent vessel by a controller using a keyboard or a mouse.

Homeland defense begins at the water's edge; on patrol with the U.S. Coast Guard

Article Abstract:

The 9-11-01 terrorist attacks in the United States had an immediate effect on the Coast Guard. Ships and aircrat were ordered back to port, and the number of security missions were increased. Security plans are being coordinated with the other services.
