From "last supper" to "first dinner"

Article Abstract:

The defense and aerospace industry has reached a crossroads once again since a historic event in 1993, when former defense Sec William Perry encouraged top industry officials to launch a large-scale consolidation and rationalization process during a meeting, which was henceforth called the 'last supper.' This latest fundamental turning point is best described by what has been termed the 'first dinner,' which is the unprecedented Oct 1999 meeting of Defense Sec John Hamre with top armaments officials from the US and Europe and top officials of the defense and aerospace industry in those areas. Topics taken up during that meeting suggest that politicians will determine the industry's future directions and prospects.

Boeing joins METEOR

Article Abstract:

The European METEOR Group PLC consortium, which is bidding against Raytheon Co for the UK Royal Air Force's BVRAAM program for next- generation, medium range, air-to-air missiles, has enlisted Boeing Co as a partner. Boeing's participation in METEOR is expected, among other things, to pave the way for the consortium to access the US military market. The primary significance of this strategic alliance is unmistakably political in nature.
