Article Abstract:

General Dynamics UK in 2006 revealed additional details of the Piranha IV 8x8 and the growth path to the highly protected highly protected Piranha V model, as the UK Ministry of Defence plans to select competing designs as candidates to fulfill the requirement for a utility variant of its Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) vehicle family. The user's expectation is that the FRES requirement would be met by as many as three families of armoured vehicle, having commonality at subsystem level.

A major redevelopment of the Piranha IV 8x8 wheeled infantry combat vehicle was portended by Mowag, part of General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), at the 10th European Armoured Fighting Vehicle Symposium in early 2005. The development program combines the off-the-shelf and future technologies to enable Piranha IV to meet the requirements of projects such as the UK's Future Rapid Effects System (FRES).
