Homeland defense strategists have much to learn from Afghan, Iraq operations

Article Abstract:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials and strategists have lots to learn form the strategies used by the Department of Defense in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The main factors for the US/coalition successes in both the campaigns were advanced planning, highly integrated communications as well as command-and-control systems, speed, agility and flexibility, which might also help while tackling the terrorist incidents in the US homeland.

Shipping container security and the weakest-link scenario

Article Abstract:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is taking steps to protect the Untied States' seaports, which are the most vulnerable component of the critical infrastructure. The Container Security Initiative (CSI) framework ensures that the terrorists do not harm by taking advantage of security gaps in international shipping, but it requires additional personnel and international cooperation, which might not be immediately available.
