Hong Kong faces flak over national security legislation

Article Abstract:

Critics have stated the need for new national security legislation for Hong Kong, a constitutional requirement on practical grounds since the existing legislation is a threat to civil liberties and is found to affect China's influence on the former colony's domestic affairs. Thus, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is attempting to propose new norms by reviewing its proposals in the light of taking public concerns into account.

Weakened Taiwan law still provokes Beijing

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has succeeded in getting a controversial national security clause regarding Article 17 passed through the legislative Yuan on November 27, 2003. However, the full law regarding TaiwanEs right to hold referenda on specific issues such as the right to call a referendum on changing TaiwanEs name, its flag, or its territory was opposed by Beijing.

China, UK increase co-operation on people smuggling

Article Abstract:

Issues are reported concerning a crackdown on people smuggling in China. The operation has been accompanied by an increase in transnational cooperation between law enforcement agencies concerned with combating the trade.
