Indian naval air arm prefers fixed-wing to STOVL

Article Abstract:

The Indian Navy is said to have abandoned its original plans to upgrade its Sea Harrier FRS.51 short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft in favor of acquiring 66 MiG-29K fighter aircrafts. The purchase of the MiG- 29K aircrafts is expected to result in the recommissioning of the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov. The higher cost of the project, $500 million compared to as much as $200 million for the STOVL aircraft upgrade, will be offsetted by the greater capabilities that will be provided by the Mig- 29Ks.

Last FACs from CMN delivered to Kuwait

Article Abstract:

French shipbuilder Constructions Mecaniques de Normandie has delivered the Al Yarmouk and the Garoh to Kuwait. The two are the last of eight 42-meter fast attack craft (FACs) ordered in 1995. The eight vessels, valued at $475 million, are designed to replace the German-built FACs that were lost during the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in 1990 and the Gulf War in 1991. The two FACs carried out eight weeks of training with support from the shipyard and the French Navy before their delivery.

Lockheed Martin, DERA team in JSF STOVL trials

Article Abstract:

Lockheed Martin has conducted test flights to support the development of the Joint Strike Fighter's short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant in the UK using a vectored-thrust aircraft advanced control vehicle. The flight testing, which was done in cooperation with the UK Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, proved that a sidestick offers satisfactory control of a STOVL aircraft at the low speeds projected when the aircraft is flying.
