Is the spaceplane dead?

Article Abstract:

The spaceplane concept has been pursued by the Air Force for the past 40 years. Launch costs could be cut from $10,000 per pound of cargo to $1,000 per pound with a reusable spaceplane. The Air Force was have greater flexibility in space access for maintaining satellites. The Air Force has had difficulties getting support from Washington for the extensive research needed.

Stephen M. Koper of US Air National Guard says that The Pentagon, Congress, states and governors are struggling to set the right course for the US Air National Guard . The controversy has created questions about who would shape the future role and structure of the Air Guard and how would the states and the Air Force balance competing desires and new missions.

Altitude; contrary to popular opinion, lower is not always best

Article Abstract:

Altitudes vary for military aircraft in wartime, influenced primarily by the mission, the aircraft, the weapons, and the available technology. Aircraft altitude choices from the Cold War through the Gulf War and Bosnia are discussed.
