Israel addresses the threats of the new millennium

Article Abstract:

The government of Israel and its military establishment completed in Jan 1999 a review of the country's strategic position and military doctrine. The review addressed Israel's nuclear alternatives in view of the threat posed by Islamic countries and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The security threats considered were the prospect of renewed conflict with Arab countries, Iran's move to acquire nuclear weapons and the prospect of being targeted by ballistic missile delivery systems. Its military doctrine is expected to develop from the citizen-soldier ethic towards a full-time, professional military.
