Italy prepares for confined straits

Article Abstract:

The Italian Navy's scope of operations was widened, after 9/11 terrorist attacks, to streamline the organization to respond better to new challenges. Over the last few years, the continued budget reductions and the anticipated transition to an all-professional force had put tremendous pressure on the service that required new resources to reverse the trend towards a predicted decline of assets and personnel.

Italy outlines 15-year expeditionary strategy

Article Abstract:

An Italian Ministry of Defence report outlines a new 15-year plan, restructured around an integrated, capability based force equipped to focus on combined operations. The Italian Navy would seek a task-revised and slightly reduced fleet capable of deterrence and rapid-response missions in littoral waters independent of supporting facilities from third parties.

France and Italy sign FREMM MoU

Article Abstract:

Italy and France have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the FREMM (Fregate Europeenne Multimission) programme. The French government has provided the necessary funding for the initial eight frigates and Italy has funded for only two.
