Surviving BRAC

Article Abstract:

The localities hit by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process can turn military base closures into growth opportunities and communities point the way to successful transformation. BRAC 2005 might be a boon to some installations that are left off the list and other factors that have kept bases off the closure lists, are room for growth, especially in associated airspace, diversity of terrain and operational cost.

Barbers Point closed after 57 years of service

Article Abstract:

Naval Air Station Barbers Point in Oahu, HI, is closed after 57 years of service. Called the 'Crossroads of the Pacific,' Barbers Point is now under the control of the state of Hawaii. Barbers Point was named after Henry Barber, a master of the 100-ft British brigantine Arthur. Construction of Barbers Point started in Nov 1941 but was temporarily delayed because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

V-22 operational squadron stands up

Article Abstract:

The Marine Corp's first operational V-22 Osprey tiltrotor squadron became a reality after 17 years of the aircrafts first flight. After a troubled development period, including two crashes, the V-22 program narrowly survived cancellation in 1990.
