LM2500s will power eighth Strategic Sealift

Article Abstract:

GE Marine Engines has been awarded a contract to supply two LM2500 aeroderative gas turbines to power the eighth Strategic Sealift vessel that National Steel and Shipbuilding Co is building for the US Navy. The LM2500 is rated at 32,000 hp, the highest rating for a gas turbine used for either commercial or military applications. Under the contract, GE Marine Engines will also provide the main reduction gears and the machinery automation drive and control system for the LM2500.

Electric ship sparks UK-French entente cordiale

Article Abstract:

ALSTOM Power Conversion has been awarded a contract to design, build and operate an Electric Ship Technology Demonstrator concept being jointly pursued by the governments of UK and France. The contract, which is worth $28.7 million, is intended to test the feasibility of the electrically- driven demonstrator concept. Under the contract, the company will operate the demonstrator at the company's plant in Whetstone, UK.

Survey ships tonic for Vosper Thornycroft

Article Abstract:

The proposal by Vosper Thronycroft to build the UK Royal Navy's two survey ships at its shipyard in Southampton, UK, has not worked out. Instead, the company will go ahead with the original plan to sub-contract the construction to Appledore Shipbuilders and to be the prime contractor for the supply of spares, maintenance and other support services once the ships are in operation.
