Lights off at Pentagon

Article Abstract:

A lieutenant in Army Reserve describes the way in 1943 he was assigned to a division assembled in Georgia to a planning section for future operations in the Pentagon where he came to know the actual status of war operations, the immediate plans and plans as fart in advance as a year. Much of his work involved forecasting needs for supplies and military equipment in different areas and their aims was that the combat units not face supply or equipment shortages.

Mistakes beget wiser colonels and generals

Article Abstract:

A major recalls his experiences while the 11th Airborne Division was stationed at Augsburg and Munich, Germany, in 1957. He explains to the present and future lieutenants that if they fail to underwrite honest mistakes or bows to external pressures and begins to treat a mistake as death instead of a valuable teaching point then they are in trouble.

The gauntlet

Article Abstract:

A soldier describes his feelings about being sent to duty in Korea during the Korean War. Those feelings were mitigated once he received a promotion and endured the gauntlet, a form of hazing by other soldiers.
