Looking beyond Iraq

Article Abstract:

U.S. President George W. Bush, during the November 2006 election campaign, vowed to deliver victory in Iraq, however evidence indicated that the war in Iraq had long since become unwinnable. It is believed that Robert M. Gates, Donald Rumsfeld's successor enjoys only a limited ability to determine the war's final outcome and the most he can accomplish is to avoid catastrophic defeat while limiting the additional losses that the US forces will inevitably suffer as they draw down.
