The M249 squad automatic weapon is used by the Marine Corps, and its use is evaluated by military personnel. The weapon received mixed reviews from personnel about its use. The squad automatic weapon is interchangeable as a machine gun or an automatic rifle.

Article Abstract:

The M249 squad automatic weapon needs to be improved in order to be an effective weapon, and the skills required by military personnel need to be improved to make it more functional. A suitable replacement would be the M16A2 heavy barrel automatic rifle.

The M249 light machinegun in the automatic rifle role

Article Abstract:

The M249 squad automatic rifle is not effective as an individual combat rifle and it should be replaced. The ammunition can cause problems, the spare barrel was added for the wrong reason and better weapons are readily available.
