Maverick missile upgrade

Article Abstract:

The US Air Force's Maverick air-to-ground missile has remained one of the most effective air-launched, precision-guided missile system in the history of US military service despite its age. The missile system, which was originally introduced in 1972, has provided a steady reinforcement to the argument against the preference for leap-ahead technologies espoused by the US Department of Defense. The Maverick's longevity and continued service in the various operations of the Air Force is testament to the feasibility of upgrading existing systems to conform to new technology instead of acquiring new models.

Replacing the Sidewinder

Article Abstract:

New generations of short-range air-to-air missiles are replacing the Sidewinder family such as the US Navy-designed AIM-9 Sidewinders as the future in air combat. The US and its allies came up with three new missiles. These are the Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) currently in initial production for UK's Royal Air Force and the AIM-9X, a next-generation Sidewinder development program financed by the US Navy and Air Force, among others.
