Naval ECDIS roll-out begins

Article Abstract:

ECDIS-N, a naval version of the electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) was introduced for merchant fleets, to enable navigation without paper charts in accordance with safety standards laid by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). However, it is reported that as navies gain practical insight into military use of ECDIS navigation aids, further refinement could be needed to bring the truly paperless warship to fruition.

NATO submarines await international rescue

Article Abstract:

The trinational NATO Submarine Rescue System is developed in response to naval staff requirements that were first raised in the late 1980s. The way in which the European navies pooled their resources to create a potentially global submarine rescue service is examined.

ESTD blazes a trail for future naval electric power systems

The Electric Ship Technology Demonstrator (ESTD) contract awarded to Alstom Power Conversion in July 2000 has been successfully fulfilled and the company is now casting for future commissions. The capabilities of ESTD and its future plans are described.
