Article Abstract:

The first test flight of the AH-1Z SuperCobra is slated for Oct 2000 while the first flight of the UH-1Y version of the 'Huey' is scheduled for Nov 2000. The flights are the culmination of Bell Helicopter Textron Inc's remanufacture and upgrade of H-1 helicopters for the Marine Corps. The company is planning the remanufacturing of 180 AH-1W and 100 UH-1N and HH- 1N helicopters into the AH-1Z and UH-1Y four-bladed-rotor configurations. Among the planned improvements are the sharing of common engines, avvionics and drive trains between the two configurations.
