New generation of night-vision goggles illuminates warfare

Article Abstract:

The growth of night warfare in the guerrilla and counter-insurgency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan necessitates the provision of night-vision goggles (NVGs) to ground-based troops. The image intensification (II or [I.sup.2]) tube, which gathers and focuses ambient light like moonlight or starlight, is being improved to produce advanced models to aid soldiers, with digital image fusion being the latest technological development offered, without discarding optical image fusion of images.
