Portugal selects ECPINS for smart navigation

Article Abstract:

The Portugal navy has signed up for the Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECPINS) devised by Canada's Offshore System International (OSI). OSI in November 2004 announced that it had signed a US$ 569,000 subcontract with Portuguese prime contractor SICOM to supply and install 30 of its base-specification International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) to replace paper charts being used by the Portuguese navy.

European AAW ships get MBMD option

Article Abstract:

A report reveals that six European navies have got the option to acquire an early-warning (EW) capability for maritime ballistic missile defense (MBMD) for their new-generation anti-air warfare (AAW) frigates and destroyers. Besides Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, France, Italy and the U.K. are also bringing out new AAW ships that have the SMART-L as their major long-range radar.
