RN oil tankers award

Article Abstract:

GEC-Marconi Marine Division VSEL has been selected by the UK MoD in Mar 1997 to build two Royal Fleet Auxiliary 196m, 12,000t oil tankers in a GBP200-million contract. RFA Wave Knight and Wave Ruler, the names chosen for the two ships, will have the capacity to reach a speed of 18 knots and a range of 8,000nm. The present Royal Fleet oil tankers, RFA Olwen and Olna, will be replaced by RFA Wave Knight and Wave Ruler, which are expected to be in operation early in the next century.

Canada gets a deal on UPHOLDER buy

Article Abstract:

Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd has recieved orders for four UPHOLDER submarines from Canada. The procurement deal, which was announced in Apr 6, 1998, also includes four shore-based training simulators, initial spare parts and fleet support personnel crew training. The first UPHOLDER submarine will be ready for delivery within about two years and will be in full operational service by the end of 2000.

VSEL wins renamed Batch 2 Trafalgar

Article Abstract:

GEC-Marconi has been selected by the Royal Navy in Mar 17, 1997, to build three 6,000t nuclear attack submarines in a contract worth nearly GBP2 billion. The submarines, which were previously called the Batch 2 Trafalgar project, has been renamed the Astute class. Three of the Royal Navy's five current Swiftsure class SSns will be replaced by the Astute class, which will be in operation in 2005.
