Why doctrine matters and how to fix it

Article Abstract:

The war-fighting concepts of the US military services have shifted away from basic reality towards ever more facile and simplistic definitions and approaches to war-fighting art since 1995 and the people in the services have generally not detected the drift. The near-decade-long publish-or-perish drumbeat for 'transformational' concepts and doctrines that combine lessons learned from real battlefields, ideas developed in the prewar world that stubbornly refuse to die, and outdated management initiatives are seen as the reasons behind the drift.

The indirect approach

Article Abstract:

Strategic attack was always the primary mission of the U.S. Air Force where the enemy's center of gravity is attacked thus bringing a level of destruction and disintegration into the enemy's military capacity and making it impossible for them to carry out any aggressive activity. But in small wars the enemy's center of gravity is intangible thus making the target difficult and so a more effective use of air power that accounts for the nature of the enemy needs to be used.
