Interview with Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen

Article Abstract:

US Defense Secretary William S. Cohen said the US and its allies need to step up their defense spending. Cohen said President Clinton's agreement to a $112 billion increase over the next six years is a good start. Consequently, procurement, which is expected to increase from $60 billion in fiscal 2001 to $70 billion in fiscal 2005, should increase further, added Cohen.

A united front for increased defense funding?

Article Abstract:

The US House of Representatives and the Senate are calling for increased defence spending for FY99 due to concerns over force readiness and modernization. Manpower retention problems, wages and benefits and medical benefit systems are expected to get top priority from the increase in FY99 budget. The Defense Department wants to solve those problems to avoid personnel shortages among land, air and sea services and increase mission capability rates of military warplanes.
