Russia facing a serious demographic security crisis

Article Abstract:

Russia is facing a severe demographic crisis with serious economic and security implications as the shrinking population could result in a shrinking pool of young, able-bodied workers and affect the military draft pool, resulting in an ethnic imbalance with a Russian minority in the armed forces and the country. Measures like increasing child benefits, lengthening maternity leave and inviting migration of ethnic Russians abroad into Russia seek to deal with the demographic crisis.

Is the Chechen war coming to an end?

Article Abstract:

The deaths of Chechen rebel president Abdul-Khalim Sadullayev and rebel vice-president Shamil Baseyev could bring an end to the already disintegrating rebel movement in Chechenya, as per the opinion of pro-Moscow Chechen President Alu Alkhanov. But other Russian and Chechen sources believe that peace in the region will be elusive as the remaining Chechen rebels may turn to decentralized violence and new rebels groups may be formed in the Caucasus.
