Russia grapples with rising racial tensions

Article Abstract:

Riots in the town of Kondopoga highlight the growing problem of communal tensions not only in Russia but also within the domestic security forces. While the riots were small scale and were quickly brought under control, they provide evidence of the fragility of inter-ethnic relations in the Soviet Union, in part exacerbated by the Kremlin's policies and the failure to tackle historical and contemporary grievances.

US and Russia see their interests diverge

Article Abstract:

The U.S. President George W. Bush and the Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Bratislava in February 2005 and sealed several agreements that will make significant contribution to international security. This summit saw a clash of ideals and interests behind friendly gestures and it marked the progressive deterioration in relations between Moscow and Washington.

Russia clings onto its influence in the Caucasus

Article Abstract:

Russia has pledged to withdraw its military forces from Georgia by the end of 2008. Even when there is some progress in Georgia, Russia will maintain its presence in the Caucasus and over former Soviet-Union states for as long as it can.
