Seeing the big picture

Article Abstract:

The Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) program initiative is the development of a nationwide maritime tracking and surveillance system by a U.S. Coast Guard-Navy team that will enable federal agents to know what is on the waterways at all times. New and old technologies will be explored, including the VHS-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) to achieve a level of maritime visibility that would enhance security, safety and the economy.

Covert coastal patrol

Article Abstract:

The lawmakers are urging the US Coast Guard to purchase a manned aircraft for covert surveillance. The $14 million earmarked for the development of the aircraft is proving to creating tensions among Senate and House members negotiating the 2006 Homeland Security Appropriations bill.

The U.S. Coast Guard is considering acquiring a Swedish-built 57mm MK3 naval gun, along with its associated ammunition, estimated to enter the fleet by 2006. The gun's specifications and features are described.
