Shopping spree: Middle East countries spending oil dollars for defense

Article Abstract:

Middle East countries are major purchasers of defense equipment, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Combat aircraft, tanks and armored vehicles, air defense and naval equipment have all been acquired but there is some question whether these countries are prepared for asymmetric threats such as those which emerged during the September 11 attacks.

Article Abstract:

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gaining favor among the leadership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO forces, which used UAVs during the Yugoslavian conflict in 1999, are mainly supplied by Israel, which uses drones for target acquisition and bomb damage assessment.
