Sovremenny delivery will give PLAN a bigger sabre to rattle over Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) could bolster China's position over the issue of Taiwan's nationhood when the country receives Russian-made Sovremmeny-class guided-missile destroyers. The first of the Sovremmeny was due to be delivered late Dec 1999, while the second was set to arrive in late Dec 1999. The warships, built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg, Russia, feature eight launchers for SS-N-22 `Sunburn' surface-to-surface missiles, and well-proven Russian weapons and sensors.

China equips itself for power projection

Article Abstract:

China's commitment to project its military capability in the South and East China Seas by 2010 has resulted in a two-tiered modernization program for the People's Liberation Army. In its quest to provide an improved arsenal for its military organization, China has embarked on a program that includes indigenous weapon development and overseas procurement. Lacking direct access to US technology, Russia has emerged as China's major supplier for both weapons and weapons technology.
