Procurement of aircraft and air-to-air weapon systems

Article Abstract:

The Finnish Air Force is currently busy with the F/A-18 Hornet program, which calls for the delivery of 64 F/A-18s from 1995 to 2001. Moreover, the service is faced with the tasks of introducing the aircraft into the fleet, achieve operational readiness in all three squadrons, create maintenance capabilities for peacetime and wartime operations, and keep the fighter's weapon system modern to counter future threats. Future procurement programs, meanwhile, include a basic trainer by 2005 and a lead-in jet trainer in 2010-15.

The AGS enigma - reflections on a fading dream

Article Abstract:

NATO's Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) program seems to have scored a major breakthrough with the formulation of a dual-track concept to accommodate both the US proposal and the European concept. However, the situation has been further complicated by the UK's selection of its Airborne Stand-off Radar (ASTOR) requirement, implying a rejection of the US' proposed solution based on its Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) and the planned Radar Technology Insertion Program (RTIP) modernization package.

CASA opens ROK office

Article Abstract:

CASA has opened an office in South Korea to market the Eurofighter there. The opening of an office follows the consortium's response to a Request for Pre-Proposals (RfPP) released in January 1998. During the inauguration, company and Spanish Air Force officials touted the advantages of the Eurofighter, including ease and flexibility of logistical support, certainty and expertise of technology transfer and the very low rate of attrition in peacetime of twin-engine fighters as compared with single-engine fighters.
