The Taiwan problem: Beijing arms for a fight it hopes to avoid

Article Abstract:

China's military buildup is primarily, focused on Beijing's Taiwan problem, a mission which it does not want to undertake, but is legitimate in Chinese eyes and would be accomplished if necessary. The mission is to quickly overwhelm Taiwan's military, restrain the Taiwan government, and deter, delay or complicate effective United States intervention.

China's grand strategy is to make war while avoiding a battle

Article Abstract:

Chinese strategic culture tends to downplay the victory in battle while emphasizing other aspects of warfare. The strategy stands in contradiction to the western way of war, which the Chinese describes as strategy over combat.
