The AIP alternative

Article Abstract:

The air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems for diesel submarines can offer better improvements in the next 15 to 20 years. Latest development of AIP is evident on the Swedish Navy's three Gotland-class subs (Gotland, Uppland and Halland), which are fitted with Swedish Stirling cycle engines that use liquid oxygen and diesel oil. Meanwhile, the German Submarine Consortium, composed of the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG and the Thyssen Nordsee Werke, is also involved in the most advanced AIP developmental work.
