Chief of the Greek Naval Staff Vice Admiral George Ioannidis discussed in an interview the maritime challenges confronting the Hellenic Navy (HN) in relation to Greece's general defense agenda. Ioannidis said the primary mission of the HN was to secure sea control and maritime lines of communications and trade among Greece's 3,000 islands and the mainland. Ioannidis also discussed HN's participation in NATO missions and its Special Assistance Provision Programmes with other navies.
