The principals: The Coast Guard again raises its profile in disaster response programs

Article Abstract:

Homeland security undersecretary for preparedness nominated Coast Guard officers to head four of the department's five federal response teams created in advance of the 2006 hurricane season. The five individuals including one Federal Emergency Management Agency official, are designated the principal federal official in their respective areas where these teams are assigned to the geographic areas with the highest potential for hurricane activity.

To the rescue

Article Abstract:

The US sea service played a leading role in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts along the Gulf coast, with the help of military contingents from Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. They performed thousands of rescue operations, evacuated those displaced by the disaster to safer ground, provided desperately needed supplies to survivors.

Revival

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the Gulf Coast and the Navy Seabees stationed at the Construction Battalion Center (CBC) in Gulfport, Mississippi were specially trained for disaster relief and recovery. The Seabees themselves suffered heavy losses with more than 500 Seabee families losing their homes in the hurricane.
