UN conference on tackling small-arms ends in deadlock

Article Abstract:

The UN Small-Arms Review Conference ended on July 7, 2006, without reaching any agreement on future international measures to limit the proliferation of small-arms. The use of consensus allowed at the conference enabled individual countries to block discussion on specific issues leading to a deadlock in the discussions and a failure of the conference.

The United Natons pointed out the international threat represented by small arms, and called for restrictions on the manufacture and trafficking in such weapons. However, the US refused to support a measure that limited manufacture and civilian possession of small arms.
