Veto raised on UNMOVIC chief

Article Abstract:

The appointment of Rolf Ekeus, a disarmament expert based in Sweden, to the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) has been vetoed by the reperesentatives of China, France and Russia. UNMOVIC is the organization that replaced the UN Special Commission that oversees the monitoring of Iraq's weapons capabilities. The opposition of the three countries to Ekeus' appointment was due to the need to look for somebody who will be more acceptable to the Iraqis.

UN military sanctions signal 'beginning of the end' for Angolan conflict

Article Abstract:

The 30-year-old civil war in Angola may be nearing its end. Robert Fowler of the United Nations Security Council's Angola Committee reports that UN military sanctions againsts the rebel National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), particularly in the shipping of weapons from sources abroad, have been working. UNITA, which is blamed by the UN for prolonging the conflict, have been finding difficulty in sustaining military against the Angolan government.

Kofi Annan calls for strenghtened UN force in DRC

Article Abstract:

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is calling for a reinforced UN military presence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Annan is making his plea for a strenghtened UN Organisation Mission in the DRC (MONUC) because of the perceived continuing deterioration of the country's security. The MONUC, which is composed of 500 military observers, is overseeing the disatrmament, demobilization and rehabilitation of about 75,000 soldiers of the DRC armed forces.
