Uribe agrees to prisoner swap

Article Abstract:

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has signed an agreement for a prisoner exchange with the country's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and would unilaterally release 50 guerrillas. The FARC desperately needs to get back its middle ranking commanders, of whom there are more than 100 prisoners suffering in prison.

870 paramilitaries disarm in Colombia

Eight hundred and seventy members of the Bloque Caclque Nutlbara (BCN) section of the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia handed their arms to the Colombian government on November 25, 2003. The demobilization ceremony was part of a peace deal agreed by President Alvaro UribeEs government and the rebels.

USA steps up support for Columbia's Uribe

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell promised $570 million of aid for the next financial year when he visited Colombia in December 2002. The unconditional support for President Alvaro Uribe includes accelerating intelligence-sharing programs.
