War operations update: Marines prep for long Iraq deployment; far-flung fifth hunts down foes

Article Abstract:

The US Marine Corps has released more details of the forthcoming deployment of large numbers of Marines to Iraq and Afghanistan to relieve Army units stretched thin by extended deployments. A Marine Air-Ground Task Force centered on the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force would employ to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with approximately 21,000 Marines and sailors including approximately 1,500 Marine Reservists, primarily in the area patrolled by the 82nd Airborne Division.

Sea Services strikes for Iraqi freedom

Article Abstract:

The contact between Navy ships and Navy and Marine Corps aircraft enabled the United States to hit targets in Iraq during the initial strikes of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Iraqi capital was hit on 20 March 2004 by 40 Tomahawk cruise missiles launched by four surface ships and two submarines in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.

Air strikes hit Afghan front lines

Article Abstract:

American naval aircraft continued their attacks against Taliban and Al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan. The aircraft carrier USS 'Carl Vinson' kept up its scheduled flights as the USS 'Enterprise' departed, relieved by the USS 'Theodore Roosevelt.'
